Postecoglou: More to come from Johnson and Werner

Ange Postecoglou says there is much more to come from Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner as they settle into life at Tottenham.

Johnson arrived from Nottingham Forest in the summer for £47.5 million and has delivered some standout performances so far this season, most notably last weekend when he came off the bench to set up both goals in Spurs 2-1 comeback win at home to Luton.

Werner, who arrived from RB Leipzig in January and could make that move permanent come the summer, has provided attacking depth to Spurs’ frontline and was also pivotal on the weekend, involving himself in both goals and missing a glorious chance in the first half.

The former Chelsea forward has two goals and two assists in six starts since returning to the Premier League and Postecoglou backs him to improve on that as he continues to settle in.

He said: “It’s fair to say he’s made an impact in every game. “Yeah, he’d probably like a couple more goals but at the same time he’s an important part of our structure and I thought he was really good on the weekend.

He has been in the last few games, but I do think there’s more improvement in him as he understands our game more.”

Speaking about Johnson, Postecoglou said: “Brennan was super on the weekend. “He’s still young, he’s developing. He’s moved to a big club where there are big expectations when you have a big transfer fee. But for the most part, I think he’s handled it really well.

“He’s another one understanding more and more how we want to play and he’s adjusting to it.

“It was always going to be a tough introduction for a young player, moving to a big club for a transfer fee. And it’s always harder for attacking players because they are usually measured on one thing: goals and assists. But I think he’s contributing in more [ways] than just that.”
