Postecoglou: No reason for me to watch 6-1 defeat

Ange Postecoglou says he did not watch Tottenham’s dismal 6-1 defeat to Newcastle at St. James Park last season.

Eddie Howe’s side stormed into a 5-0 lead after just 21 minutes in what was arguably the lowest point of Spurs’ subpar campaign last season.

The manner of the display and the subsequent defeat was symptomatic of the direction the club was going in at the time. Under Postecoglou, who believes there is no reason for him to watch the game back, Spurs have improved massively this season.

In fact, last season, Newcastle finished 11 points ahead of Spurs, but the form of both sides has altered dramatically, with Spurs now 13 points ahead of Newcastle this season heading into the weekend’s game.

When asked if he watched Spurs’ 6-1 defeat against Newcastle last season, Postecoglou said: “No I have not, because there is no reason for me to do so. But yeah, it will be a tough game. I don’t think the 12:30 kick-off can affect us because we are leaving today.

“They [Newcastle] are obviously going through a very tough time at the moment in terms of injuries like most clubs this year, but for them they have probably been hurt for a more prolonged period.

“When I watch them, particularly at home, they are still a very good side. I think the crowd gives them a lot of energy and the games irrespective of who they play against is always high tempo because of the energy in the stadium.

“We are going to have to match that energy tomorrow, because that’s how we like to play our football as well and hopefully by bringing that energy we can overcome what will be a tough challenge.”
