Postecoglou on his approach to management: ‘I hope people don’t know what position we’re in when they see me’

Ange Postecoglou insists he is not getting carried away with Tottenham’s strong start to the season.

Spurs sit top of the Premier League table heading into Friday’s clash with Crystal Palace, with Postecoglou overseeing seven wins and two draws in the first nine league games as head coach of the club.

But the Tottenham boss says it is crucial that he remains consistent in his approach despite the results and performances if his side are to continue to be successful.

“They’re not the only two options. It’s not jokes and giggles or me coming in throwing my significant weight around,” Postecoglou said when asked about his attitude to winning and losing.

“I’m the same, mate, it doesn’t matter. I’m hoping that when people see me, they don’t know where we are, what position we are.

“At Celtic we were on top for a very long time but at the beginning when we weren’t on top, I don’t think anyone saw anything different in my demeanour and I don’t think they will.

“It’s not about staying level headed or getting carried away, it’s just that my role in that context is to be the one thing that people can sort of rely upon to be consistent in that I have one objective all the time – how can we be better?

“When that’s your objective, it doesn’t really matter where you are in the table or what the outside noise may or may not be doing.

“It’s about the players, the staff and everyone involved in the football club looking and when I come in every day I’m buzzing about what I’m doing.”

Tottenham fans have enjoyed many celebratory scenes at full-time recently and Postecoglou also says he is enjoying the raucous atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“I stay out of the dressing room partly because of the music choices of the players,” Postecoglou joked.

“Most clubs want to turn their ground into a fortress, ours is becoming a nightclub mate. I’m all for it.”
