Postecoglou says Bissouma must win back trust as midfielder is suspended following laughing gas incident

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma has been suspended by the club for their opening game of the Premier League season against Leicester after a video showed him appearing to inhale laughing gas.

Bissouma posted a video on social media which appeared to show him inhaling the class C drug and Spurs boss Postecoglou says the 27-year-old must learn from his mistake.

He said: “I’ve been in the game for a long time, every time a situation like this arises and they do happen, I think I’ve always tried to look at them in a couple of different ways.

“One is that there’s a person involved and in this case it’s Biss and he’s made a really poor decision.

“You want to understand that and want to try and help him through that. As a club, what we can do to make sure he doesn’t make those kind of choices and decisions in the future.

“Within that context, there are still sanctions that are involved, and some of those include education and giving him a clearer understanding of how wrong it was.

“I always want to give people an opportunity to learn from their mistakes.#

“The second part of that is he’s also a footballer at this club, he has responsibilities, he has responsibilities to the club, to his teammates, to our supporters and everyone associated with the club and he’s failed in those duties so there’s got to be sanctions for that.

“He won’t be available for Monday, we’ve suspended him for Monday’s game and beyond that there is also some trust building that needs to happen between Biss and me and Biss and the group, and that’s what he needs to work hard at from now on to try and win that back.

“That’s got nothing to do with just one game he’s suspended for, he’s going to have to earn that.

“The door is open for him and hopefully we can help him to realise that the decisions he makes impact more than just him and hopefully allows him to make better decisions moving forward.”
