Rating the England squad’s performances at Euro 2024

England’s Euro 2024 campaign ended with heartbreak as they lost out to Spain in the final of the competition.

It was a mixed tournament overall for the Three Lions, who managed to reach another final despite performances on the pitch proving to be underwhelming despite the positive results.

Here is how we rated the England squad members who played at the competition…

Jordan Pickford B+

Once again a dependable figure in between the sticks. He was crucial to helping England into the semi-finals by saving Manuel Akanji’s penalty and made some big saves along the way to the final. Kicked it long far too often, however, which while not all his fault, did not help England when it came to better controlling games.

Kyle Walker D

At fault in the final and a disappointing tournament overall for the veteran full-back who does not look like the player he once was.

John Stones A

Excellent at the heart of defence despite having played very little football heading into the tournament. One of England’s best players of the Gareth Southgate era.

Marc Guehi A

Outstanding in his first tournament playing for the senior side alongside Stones. Has everything you want in a central defender.

Ezri Konsa B

Deputised excellently for the suspended Guehi in the penalty shoot-out win over Switzerland but his opportunities were limited overall.

Luke Shaw C+

Only featured in the latter stages of the tournament but made a difference to the team when he did play.

Kieran Trippier D

Played out of position at left-back and the team suffered as a result. Did okay defensively but was very limited on the ball.

Declan Rice B

Perhaps the most difficult player to assess. Had some good moments and performances and some not so good ones too, including in the final. Needs to find more consistency for England at international tournaments in what is a very important position as the team’s number six.

Kobbie Mainoo B+

Started the tournament on the bench but established himself as Rice’s midfield partner after some impressive displays in the knockout stages. Failed to have the impact he had done in the previous games during the final but a hugely exciting prospect for England.

Conor Gallagher C

Started the goalless draw with Slovenia but failed to do enough to keep his place in the team. A valuable squad member who offers tenacity in midfield but not quite good enough to start.

Trent Alexander-Arnold C

Did not have the impact he would have hoped for when starting alongside Rice in midfield for the first two group games. Some glimpses of the creativity he provides for Liverpool but is yet to establish himself for England.

Ebere Eze C+

Did not play a great deal but had some valuable contributions off the bench to help get England up the pitch at important times in games.

Bukayo Saka A

One of England’s standout players from the tournament. Scored a fantastic equaliser against Switzerland to take the game to extra time and was the team’s biggest attacking threat.

Phil Foden C

An underwhelming campaign for the Manchester City midfielder, who went into the tournament with high expectations after winning the Player of the Season award in the Premier League. Did not have much of an impact apart from an excellent first-half performance against the Netherlands.

Jude Bellingham B+

Scored the winner in the opening group game win against Serbia and his bicycle kick equaliser against Slovakia will be remembered as one of the great England goals. Always a goal threat but sometimes failed to have an impact for prolonged periods of games.

Cole Palmer A-

A danger every time he got an opportunity from the bench. Scored a brilliant equaliser in the final against Spain and set up Ollie Watkins for the winning goal against the Netherlands.

Jarrod Bowen C

Received limited opportunities to impress.

Harry Kane C

Clearly not fully fit. Still managed three goals on the way to the final but his performances were poor and he failed to provide England with a focal point up top. His lack of energy was a big issue.

Ollie Watkins B

Scored an outstanding winner against the Netherlands in one of the few chances he received to play.

Ivan Toney B-

Crucial to the turnaround against Slovakia and, like Watkins, arguably should have received more game time in place of Kane.
