Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says his side are lacking “pace and power up top” after securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Fulham.

Lisandro Martinez’s deflected second-half strike handed United a much needed victory in the Premier League having lost four of their last six games heading into the clash.

The win sees United climb up to 12th in the table but Amorim admits that while there are positives to take, the improvement needed is clear to see.

“It’s really important to have this feeling away from home,” he told TNT Sports.

“We tried to control the game, tried to play our game, but we need to improve a lot. We can feel it. But this time we held the result and closed the game. It’s really important to win.

“It’s really important to keep a clean sheet because clearly you are closer to winning games and it gives you confidence. We didn’t suffer too much today and that is a good sign.

“It’s not just the clean sheet, it’s the way we defended. We need to improve a lot with the ball. Without the ball, we were okay, controlled the game, we scored and now we move on.

On his side’s goalscoring struggles, however, Amorim acknowledged: “I think so. Even in the second half when we want to change some things and we lack some pace and power up front but it is what it is.

“We need to have more ball, create more chances, we need to take the ball to the last third and we struggle a lot in these details but winning helps a lot to improve.”

With the transfer window approaching the closing stages, Amorim says he is still keen to improve the squad but admits the club have to avoid “previous mistakes”.

“We have to be cautious and the rules here, you know that we have to follow the rules,” he said.

“I think we did mistakes in the past that we cannot make now.

“We are focused on improving the team. Let’s see.”
