Sandro Tonali: Italian international set for Newcastle move

AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali is set to make a stunning move to Newcastle United which could be confirmed this weekend.

Tonali would be the first statement signing from Eddie Howe’s side, as they prepare for their first foray into the Champions League in over 20 years. The 23-year-old Italian international’s move to St James’ Park is set to be confirmed by the end of this weekend, after news of the transfer was broken by Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein.

The Magpies were linked with a move for Tonali’s fellow Italian international Nicolo Barella, who plays for AC Milan’s biggest rivals Inter, but Eddie Howe has decided the 23-year-old is his preferred target, who has been capped 14 times by his country.

Known for his set pieces and ball carrying capabilities, the former Brescia player will add further depth and quality to a Newcastle midfield that includes Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock.

The deal to bring Tonali to the Premier League is set to total £68.5 million with add ons, which if applied, would be a club record deal.

Rumours that the deal was far from being completed were brushed aside by Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Riso, who all but confirmed the deal was done.

“This is an excellent deal, Newcastle is the perfect project for Tonali,” Riso said. “Newcastle wanted Sandro as key signing at all costs.

“He will be a crucial player for Magpies. This deal also helps AC Milan and Brescia’s finances a lot”.

Newcastle are also interested in Tonali’s teammate Theo Hernandez and Inter’s Federico Dimarco.
