Pep Guardiola on Ruben Dias’ comments about Southampton: “They can do whatever they want.

“They decide, being relegated, to play in that way, so it’s our duty to break them. This is what we have to do.”

“It’s always difficult when a team plays in that way. Long balls, you cannot press.

“We have three games left, one in the FA Cup. I didn’t expect differently a month ago that it’s a fight until the end.”

“They defended so, so deep. After 15 or 20 minutes I realised we need a striker or a winger especially to break them.

“I didn’t expect they would be so defensive.”

Southampton fans haven’t had much to cheer this season but they certainly enjoyed that.

Now Southampton have a chance as Archer shoots wide from a tight angle!

Marmoush races down the left, plays it back into the area but Southampton just about manage to clear it away before a City player can get there.

Smallbone replaces Fernandes.

De Bruyne crosses for Haaland but the striker’s header falls harmlessly wide.

So close from Marmoush! He steals possession before unleashing a powerful strike which cannons back off the bar.

City have SEVEN minutes to find a winner!

Stewart and Manning are on for these last few minutes.

Sulemana and Wellington go off.

De Bruyne has a go from distance but the shot lacks power and Ramsdale gets down to claim.

It’s backs to the wall for Southampton in these closing stages.

Marmoush has come on in place of Kovacic.

De Bruyne’s cross is headed back across goal by Haaland with Savinho there, but he is denied by Ramsdale, though it looked to be going wide anyway.

Ramsdale then tips a Dias header over the bar.

Akanji goes for the bottom corner from distance but his shot flies just wide of the target.

How have City not scored there?

De Bruyne sends Haaland racing through on goal, he cuts back and squares it across goal but it evades both O’Reilly and Savinho with an open goal in front of them and the chance goes to waste.

That really should have been a goal.

Savinho and O’Reilly are on for City.

Foden and Lewis are replaced.

Akanji heads a City corner on target but Ramsdale gets across well to palm it away to safety.

Southampton have been very content with sitting behind the ball and keeping City out but have started to be more ambitious in these last few minutes, with a couple of dangerous attacks.

It has opened up more space for City too though.

Another chance for City and this game has suddenly burst into life!

De Bruyne sends Doku away down the left, who plays it to Haaland but the striker can’t get it under control before Ramsdale comes out and claims.

Dibling goes off and is replaced by Archer.

Good chance for City and it comes through Doku again. He beats his man down the left and cuts it back for Silva, whose shot at goal is diverted over the bar by a Southampton defender close to the goal line.
