Live updates from the Stadium of Light as Sunderland host Aston Villa.
And that’s the end of the contest here at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland dominated the opening half an hour, but a Mandava red card changed the game. Matty Cash fired Villa ahead with a rocket from outside of the box in the 67th minute, only for Wilson Isidor’s half-volley to send the Stadium of Light into raptures eight minutes later. A good performance and result for Sunderland given the circumstances and Villa remain winless after five games. Full time here at the Stadium of Light Sunderland 1-1 Aston Villa. Stay tuned for reactions and quotes from the managers here.
We’re surely nearing the end here. Sunderland need to get out of their half.
Roefs saves Watkins point blank header, though he is flagged offside anyway. It’s a tense atmosphere here at the Stadium of Light.
Five added minutes here. It’s going to be a nervy ending for ten-man Sunderland.
Sadiki makes way for Dan Neil. It looks as though Le Bris will be happy with the point.
Sadiki’s gone down with what looks like cramp here. He’s put in a great shift today.
Jadon Sancho has looked lively since coming on here. You can’t help but think he could’ve caused Sunderland more problems if he had been introduced sooner.
Xhaka is shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Maatsen and Villa have a free-kick in a potentially dangerous position here. McGinn to take.
Harvey Elliott finds himself free just inside the box but fires wide.
Jadon Sancho makes his Premier League debut for Villa as he replaces Morgan Rogers, and Kamara is replaced by Bogarde.
A triple change here for Sunderland.
Playoff final hero Mayenda replaces goalscorer Wilson Isidor, Geertruida replaces Enzo Le Fée and Masuaku replaces Talbi. Le Bris’ team could be looking for a winner here.
Well that’s one way to respond! Xhaka’s looping header is met by Isidor on the half volley and he fires the ball into the back of the net. The roof has just come off the Stadium of Light! Game on!
Sadiki is shown a yellow card.
Guessand makes way for Malen. Emery wants his team to score another and wrap this game up.
It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Sunderland have been the better team this afternoon. They’ve come close to scoring and have looked dangerous, but it’s Villa who strike first. The Stadium of Light is, however, expecting a response and willing its team on.
The villain of this contest strikes again. Cash, who many Sunderland fans feel milked Mandava’s challenge that resulted in the red card, has just fired one in from outside the box! A sensational goal, the keeper tried to stop it but the shot was too powerful and it sails into the net. Villa’s first PL goal of the season, what a way to finally open their account. Advantage Villa!
Ian Maatsen has just been booked for his antics in the box before the corner. That’s a harsh one to receive.
Hume to take. A great run from Sadiki to win it.
Villa have been incredibly wasteful this afternoon, with every set piece opportunity being squandered.
McGinn to take.
Digne is replaced by Elliott, as Buendía makes way for Maatsen.
The Stadium of Light is not happy. Tyrone Mings is down following a messy mix-up in the box that saw Sunderland come dangerously close to scoring. A foul somewhere in the mess sees Villa get away with one there.
Villa only manage to see it out for another corner. Xhaka to take.
Corner to Sunderland. Trai Hume to take.
Villa need to take the sting out of the game here. The Stadium of Light is truly serving as the 12th, or rather 11th, man right now.
