Live updates as Sunderland host fierce rivals Newcastle at the Stadium of Light.

Howe says Newcastle players were aware of the importance of the derby

“100% the players knew. In our preparation we tried to cover every base in terms of the importance of the fixture but I think in professional sport sometimes there’s random events in games which dictate how the players feel and that’s nothing to do with the preparation or importance of the game, it’s sport.

“The game twists and turns in moments and those moments went against us today.”

Burn taken to hospital

Howe also says Dan Burn went to hospital because he was struggling to breath at half-time after taking a knock to the ribs.

Howe defends Newcastle players

“I don’t think anyone has gone out there with any other intention than trying to win the game and give their best.

“Was there possibly a bit of fatigue in our performance? Yes. Not an excuse, just a reality.

“We’re stretched in our backline, we’ve got a number of injuries and that is alarming for us so it’s not a perfect field for us currently, we’re battling a few situations, but we still have to say we should have played better.”

Howe backs Woltemade after own goal

“I hope he won’t take that personally. It’s one of those things that can happen in a game.

“He’s gone back with good intentions and he’s defended set plays for us well since he’s been here. That’s just an unfortunate moment and I don’t hold him in any way responsible for that.”

Howe apologises to fans

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe: “So disappointed for our supporters and sorry for the performance really in the sense of a lack of goalmouth action, the lack of clinical attacking which we’ve tried to pride ourselves on over recent seasons.

“It wasn’t there today and for that we’re sorry. It certainly wasn’t a lack of effort from the lads but today wasn’t our day.”

Le Bris praises Sunderland's progress

“I think we showed our progress. It’s not only me, it’s not only one player, it’s about the collective project, team work and I think it’s one of the main strengths of this club. We are working together and the players are showing on the pitch, these connections.”

Le Bris says his squad knew the importance of winning this game

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris: “We’ve had players who have been here for a long time so they probably know better than the new ones how important this derby is. Especially when we lost the previous one.

“We can enjoy it but then reset because we’ll have another tough challenge in a week.”

Ballard says Sunderland deserved victory

Dan Ballard was part of the team which lost to Newcastle in 2024. Speaking after today’s win, he told Sky Sports: “You cannot describe [the feeling]. It was so painful [losing 3-0 at home to Newcastle in the FA Cup in January 2024] for the players and for the fans so we felt we had let them down so we’re delighted with this win.

“It prepared us more for today. We came in with more quality in this team, real leaders, we stuck in there, fought really hard and I thought we deserved the win.”

Xhaka reaction

Granit Xhaka, speaking to Sky Sports after the game, says those in the Sunderland squad who were involved in their last defeat to Newcastle back in 2024 motivated the side to get revenge this afternoon.

DERBY DAY DELIGHT for Sunderland (Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle)

And it’s derby day delight for Sunderland, as Newcastle make the 12-mile trip home empty handed! A closely contested encounter almost boiled over in the final minutes as clashes between the fierce rivals saw four players be shown yellow cards moments before the final whistle. An own goal from Nick Woltemade in the 46th minute was enough to see Sunderland take all three points and claim bragging rights over the Magpies. Newcastle remain winless against Sunderland in the Premier League since 2011, and fail to leapfrog the Black Cats in the Premier League table. Sunderland remain unbeaten at home this season, and Régis Le Bris’ Sunderland will clearly take some stopping here in the North East. Full time at the Stadium of Light Sunderland 1, Newcastle 0. Stay tuned for the reactions from both managers here.
