‘This has to be the year’ – ten Hag reveals bigger expectations for Man Utd youngster as new signing makes debut

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag believes Amad Diallo has a big season ahead of him after scoring in his side’s 2-0 pre-season friendly win over Scottish side Rangers.

Amad opened the scoring before Joe Hugill’s second-half strike gave United victory as new signing Lenny Yoro played his first game for his new club.

And ten Hag believes Amad must no longer be considered inexperienced and has a big role to play in the coming campaign.

“We have to see Amad in a different way,” ten Hag explained to MUTV.

“Of course he’s still young but he’s not inexperienced anymore. Last season he had bad times with bad injuries but before that he was in the Championship and had a great season.

“At the end of last season, he had a very good time in our first team and played some good games.

“Now, this season, this has to be the year. It’s great that he starts like this, on Monday he couldn’t play, he was not allowed to go into Norway but today he could play and he played a very good game.”

United were beaten 1-0 by Rosenberg in their first pre-season friendly on Monday and ten Hag says he was pleased with the improvement on show.

“Pre-season is friendlies and I want to win every game so I was very disappointed on Monday, especially with the performance,” he said.

“That is even more important in pre-season – the performance. You want to grow and that is what we have seen today in comparison with Monday, which was a low standard.

“Today was much better, especially in the prospect of aggressiveness, which was much better. We were much more on the front foot and it was a team [effort] in both halves so, yeah, it was enjoyable to watch.”
