Ten players Lee Carsley should consider giving an England chance

Interim England boss Lee Carsley will announce his squad for the September international break on Thursday.

Carsley will take charge of the team in their Nations League fixtures against Ireland and Finland, following the departure of Gareth Southgate as boss.

Interim international managers have often been known to give opportunities to players who are yet to really break into this international setup, in the hope of leaving their mark for the future.

Stuart Pearce chose to snub experience in favour of youth when he was in temporary charge back in 2012, leaving out Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand but calling up Frazier Campbell and Tom Cleverley.

With that in mind, here’s ten players Carsley should consider giving an opportunity to this international break who have not played much, or at all, for England of late…

Ben White

The departure of Southgate and his assistant Steve Holland should mark the end of Ben White’s exile from the England squad, and Carsley should do everything he can to get the defender back involved with the national team. He is simply too good of a player not to be.

Emile Smith-Rowe

It might be early on in the season, but the Fulham man has already shown what he is capable of when fit. These games would be a great chance to see him in an England shirt, having also played under Carsley for the England U21 side.

Max Kilman

It’s surprising that the West Ham defender has not received an England call up yet. His form for Wolves earned him a big money move to east London this summer and with England not exactly blessed with depth of quality in central defence, Kilman at least deserves a chance to show what he can do.

Noni Madueke

The Chelsea winger scored a brilliant hat-trick against Wolves, showing exactly what he is capable of when he’s at his best. He has not been a mainstay in the first team since arriving at the club but this could be the season he makes that right wing spot his own and would be an exciting call-up to the England squad. He’s also another who has worked closely with Carsley for the U21s.

Tino Livramento

Livramento has displaced Kieran Trippier at right-back for Newcastle which says a lot about how highly he is rated by Eddie Howe. He has the ability to play on both the right and the left and continues to get better and better.

Tyrick Mitchell

England’s lack of a proper left-back until Luke Shaw returned from injury was a problem at the Euros, and with Shaw out again, perhaps the obvious solution would be Tyrick Mitchell. He has been consistently performing for Crystal Palace over the past couple of years and is worthy of a call-up.

James Maddison

The Spurs attacking midfielder was a surprise omission from the England squad for Euro 2024 but has started this season like he has a point to prove and there are few players who can provide what he does in the final third when he is on form.

Adam Wharton

The Crystal Palace midfielder was part of the England squad for Euro 2024 but failed to get on the pitch. He offers something different to England’s other midfielders and giving him a chance to show what he can do in a starting spot would be a helpful exercise for Carsley, and whoever England’s future permanent manager is.

Levi Colwill

The central defender has started Chelsea’s first two league games and has looked solid. He still has plenty of room for development but at 21, getting him involved with the England group now would be beneficial for the future and he is well known to Carsley having played for his U21 side.

Jamie Bynoe-Gittens

The Borussia Dortmund youngster has made a flying start to the Bundesliga season, scoring twice in his side’s win over Eintracht Frankfurt after coming off the bench. He would certainly be a shock inclusion but has bags of potential.
