‘Used to winning’ – Carsley explains thinking behind Madueke, Gomes and Gibbs-White call ups

Lee Carsley says the new faces in the England squad will bring much needed “energy and enthusiasm” following the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.

Noni Madueke, Angel Gomes, Morgan Gibbs-White and Tino Livramento have all been named in the England squad for the first time for the games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

And explaining those decisions, interim manager Carsley said: “Angel’s very technical, controls the game with his skill and technique. Very determined, excellent attitude. Technically and tactically excellent. I think he’s a player that people are going to really be excited to see.

“Morgan is a very attacking player, full of energy and very exciting. He has an excellent work rate and is very difficult to play against.

“He’s been successful with England Under-21s. A lot of these players that we brought in are used to winning and going to the latter stages of tournaments.

“Noni has done really well for the U21s. He’s really improved his all round game, his goals and assists. The way that he’s started this season in terms of his energy, with his pace and his directness, I think he’s a player that will be really important for us in this camp.

“Baring in mind that we’re coming off the back of losing in a final, I think maybe the squad need that little injection of enthusiasm and energy and the new players coming in will definitely bring that.”
