Van Gaal’s UNIQUE response to Di Maria criticism

LOUIS VAN GAAL showcased his unique style of humour in response to Angel Di Maria calling the Dutchman ‘the worst trainer he’s ever had’.

The pair worked together during a troubled spell at Manchester United which ended in the summer of 2015 as Di Maria brought an end to his Old Trafford torture by joining PSG.

The already fractured relationship took a further downturn as Di Maria publicly criticised Van Gaal to the media ahead of Argentina’s crunch World Cup quarter final against the Netherlands.

Speaking to TYC Sports, Di Maria said: “My problem at Manchester was the coach.

“Van Gaal was the worst of my career. I would score, assist, and the next day he would show me my misplaced passes.

“He displaced me from one day to the other, he didn’t like players being more than him.”

Van Gaal, hoping to lead the Netherlands to World Cup glory in his last tournament as a manager, issued a rather strange reply, involving Memphis Depay – sat next to him at the pre-match press conference.

When asked for comment, Van Gaal told reporters in Qatar: “The fact he would refer to me as the worst trainer, he is one of the only players to have said that.

“It’s usually the other way round. It is sad, I don’t like that Angel said that but it’s a pity… but it’s the way it is.

“A head coach has to take decisions that don’t always end well. But the same happened to Memphis.

“I didn’t pick him at United – and now we want to kiss each other mouth-to-mouth. We’re not going to do that now, but there you go, that’s how things happen.”

The Netherlands and Argentina go face-to-face tomorrow evening in Doha with a place in the last four of the World Cup at stake.
