Guglielmo Vicario insists Tottenham need to have a ‘better mindset’ when playing in the Champions League after their 0-0 draw away to Monaco.

Tottenham struggled to create chances in a match that only stayed goaless because of eight outstanding saves from the Spurs goalkeeper.

After only one win in their last six matches in the Premier League and Champions League the Italian criticised his teams mindset going into big matches.

“I think Monaco were better than us, to be fair,” he said. “We need to have a better mindset when we go to face Champions League matches, especially away from home.

“We know they are tough and our level was not the best, so we need to work on that, but I think we have a good balance.

“We scored some goals in the Premier League, so we have the capacity and the capability to do it. This was just not our best day, but we managed to get a point, so we will move forward from that.”

Vicario has faced criticism from some Tottenham fans and pundits after conceding two strikes from outside the area against Aston Villa but he put in a stellar display against Monaco.

“Yes probably,” he said when asked if the match against Monaco was the busiest he has been all season. “Sometimes it’s needed. Today was my day in terms of making saves – I am happy I was able to help the team.”

In the 36-team league phase of the Champions League the top eight teams qualify for the Round of 16 without having to play a play-off tie in February.

Vicario was asked about the importance of finishing in those positions: “It will be the best option, of course,” he said. “We will try.

“Eight out of 36 is not even 25 percent of teams, so it’s a big effort to try to do it. We will try, but the important thing is to be there, to stay there and to fight for this Champions League.”
