WATCH: Southgate on Brazil defeat and injuries to England stars

Gareth Southgate believes England should have drawn with Brazil and confirms Harry Kane will be leaving the squad after injury.

A first ever Seleção goal for 17-year-old Endrick condemned the Three Lions to defeat in their first match of 2024, as Southgate’s side begin their preparations for Euro 2024.

The England manager confirmed captain Harry Kane will be returning to Bayern Munich with an injury, whilst believing his side deserved at least a draw against one of the top sides in World football.

“Kane will go back [to Germany],” Southgate said in his post-match press conference. “He won’t be fit for Tuesday.

“I was pleased. Clearly don’t like losing football matches but I thought there were a lot of very good individual performances from players who have hardly played for England.

“More regular players were very good. We had as many attempts on goal as they have and the difference was one moment.

“There were a couple of great quality passes. You’re talking about players at the very highest level of the game. You’re going to have moments where your keeper has to make a save or defender block.

“We had those moments at the other end. If it finished a draw it would have been fair. We’re playing a top team. Chances are going to be limited.

“Perhaps we had the chances from set-pieces to capitalise on one of them. I was pleased with the players that went in. We need to find out about them.

“I thought Ollie [Watkins] did a good job. Didn’t get that clear chance on goal you might want. A lot of his work was very good.

“I know there will always be a negative reaction to losing but I thought with 15 minutes to go the crowd were with the team, they could see inexperienced players going in and doing well.
