The second half is underway in San Francisco and Switzerland are straight back on the attack.

Qatar boss Julen Lopetegui, ahead of the game against Switzerland: “For sure excited, butterflies. Try to be ready and balanced for the big challenge in front of us.

Switzerland finished top of their qualifying group with four wins and two defeats. They face Qatar in this evening’s first live match.

The Swiss have never got past the quarter-finals at the World Cup, last reaching that stage on home soil in 1954. Since then, their adventures have typically ended in the last 16, as was the case in 2022 in Doha when they lost 6-1 to Portugal.

“It’s a match that will tell us where we stand, but I think we’re in a good place to start this competition,” said Ouahbi, who replaced Walid Regragui as Morocco boss in March.

“We’ve got to be in confident in ourselves and what we’ve done. We shouldn’t fear Brazil but treat them with respect.

“Lots of people say it’s not the Brazil of old, but it’s still Brazil.”

Carlo Ancelotti did not play down the test that Morocco will be for Brazil.

“Don’t forget, tomorrow we are facing the champions of Africa, Morocco. They’re a great team,” he said.

“Morocco are a great team and they have complete players who perform in Europe. In order to beat them, we have to defend better and attack better, otherwise we will be in trouble.”

Alongside Scotland’s clash tonight, Brazil also face the AFCON champions.

English referee Michael Oliver has been ruled out of his first match at the 2026 World Cup because of injury.

Fifa said Oliver is expected to be available for selection “in the coming days”.

Oliver is one of six English on-field officials at the World Cup, with Anthony Taylor also among the 52 referees.

“Pulisic received a kick in his calf and he felt tight at the end of the first half. We didn’t want to take any risks. It was difficult for him to walk but hope that it is not a big issue and he can be ready for the next one.”
