Thomas Partey has been refused entry to Canada ahead of Ghana’s World Cup opener with Panama on Thursday.

The midfielder should be able to face England when they play in the USA, however.

Partey is facing allegations of rape and sexual assault, which he denies, and is set to go on trial next year.

Scotland captain Andy Robertson: “The last Euros was quite unique. We were in the opener against the host nation which is never an easy task.

“When it came we maybe weren’t ready to go and strike.

“Now we’re locked in, we’re ready for tomorrow. All the training sessions are done.”

“Perfect. Ready to go,” Scotland boss Steve Clarke says on Scott McTominay’s fitness.

On the Napoli man’s importance for his side: “I think I have 26 super stars here. If you try and put so much on to one player is not fair.

“Some daft coach put him as a centre half five years ago, obviously he’s not a centre half.

“We are delighted with Scott’s abilities, but we’ll need another 15 if we want a positive tournament.”

A big talking point from the World Cup has been the introduction in hydration breaks midway through each half.

USA boss Mauricio Pochettino, however, says they should not happen every game.

“I don’t like it. I only like it when the conditions are extreme, but when the conditions are good, it is unnecessary,” he said.

Speaking after his side’s opening win against South Africa, Mexico boss Javier Aguirre fired back at suggestions from South Africa manager Hugo Broos that Aguirre’s side were not very good in possession.

Aguirre said: “Did he say that about us? I think they did not have a good defence either, or any ball possession. They just had the one shot on goal, what else?

“If we are clueless, we will have to score five. Damn it, I guess we are clueless.

“We have to win 4-0, and there would not be these kind of comments.”

Ahead of their game against Scotland, Haiti have been told they must change their kit because it does not comply with FIFA rules.

The kit includes a depiction of the Battle of Vertieres in 1803, which secured the country’s independence.

Former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko is still a key player for Bosnia & Herzegovina at the age of 40, and will likely feature when his side take on hosts Canada later tonight.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game, the striker said: “I did not think I would be playing at 40. But I am listening to my body and doing a lot of work before and after training because I am obviously not the youngest anymore and I need to care about my legs, my body and that’s what I’m doing.”

Scotland midfielder Kenny McLean ahead of Scotland’s opener against Haiti: “We want to make a stamp in this competition. First thing’s first we start with Haiti, we don’t want to look too far ahead.

“Looking beyond this, there’s a lot in place. We have a lot of young boys coming through.

“Twenty-eight years was way too long, it’s not going to be that long again.”

Ahead of Brazil’s World Cup opener against Morocco, goalkeeper Alisson has heaped big praise on his boss Carlo Ancelotti for the impact he has made since taking over.

“Since Ancelotti arrived, the environment has been transformed,” the Liverpool goalkeeper said. “He is someone who carries a very strong presence and gives us that calmness of an environment focused on work, without being focused on controversies or having to deal with other issues.”

Canada will unfortunately be without their star man Alphonso Davies for tonight’s game through injury.

But boss Jessie Marsch is hoping he can play a part later in the tournament.

England faced local side Miami FC in their final warm up game before the start of their World Cup, winning 6-0 in the behind closed doors game with Ivan Toney scoring a hat-trick.

Some interesting comments from England midfielder Jude Bellingham, reflecting on the last international tournament.

“At the Euros we got some things a little bit wrong off the pitch,” he said on England’s Lions’ Den show.

“I don’t feel like the group connected as well as it could have for a number of reasons. Expectation was part of it – we had done well in 2018 and done well in Qatar [for the 2022 World Cup] and when it came to that tournament we were seen as one of two or three teams that should win it.

“We were not playing particularly well so even when we were winning you didn’t get the feeling you were as happy as you should be.

“There has to be that element of relentless and wanting to win but it is the nature of football that wins go out of the system quickly and we should hold on to that moment a little more.

“I think this time round having those experiences… and knowing, for example, that the guy who scores the winning goal in the World Cup final isn’t always the one you’d bet your house on so you’ve always got to be ready, everyone’s got to feel loved and feel a huge part of the team. The other thing is just to enjoy it.”

Many people are tipping France to go all the way this summer and win the tournament.

Looking at their squad, it’s understandable why!

USA boss Mauricio Pochettino says defender Chris Richards will be involved in the squad for their opening game against Paraguay later.

“We will decide whether he’ll start from the beginning of the game or on the bench,” Pochettino said.

“Our medical staff and performance worked really hard his recovery. It’s a really good feeling to have 26 players available to be selected.”

Some very positive news coming out of the Spain camp.

Star wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams have both been training in the build up to their first game in a huge boost for boss Luis de la Fuente.

Both missed the warm-up friendly against Peru with injuries but look like they could be fit for the opening game of the tournament against Cape Verde.

Tottenham’s new signing Marcos Senesi has been called up to the Argentina squad for the World Cup, following an injury to  Leonardo Balerdi.

Some disappointing news for Japan ahead of the start of their tournament.

Midfielder Wataru Endo, who has been sidelined for Liverpool for much of the season, has been ruled out of this World Cup and has also announced his retirement from international football.

“I will be retiring from the national team,” Endo said. “So from here on, I’ll be cheering for the Japan national team as one of the fans. The moment when the Japan national team wins the World Cup will surely come some day. Let’s believe in that and cheer them on together.”
