‘You will see why’ – Calafiori on joining Arsenal over rival clubs

Riccardo Calafiori says Arsenal was “the best project” for him after penning a long-term deal with the club.

Calafiori’s long awaited £40m move to the Gunners has finally been completed and Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says the defender could make his first appearance in the friendly against Liverpool this week.

The 22-year-old admits he had a decision to make over his next move with rival clubs also interested in the Italian but says he is confident Arsenal is the right club for him.

“There were other clubs but now I don’t care anymore, I’m here,” Calafiori said.

“I want to improve and I want to win trophies. It’s the best project for me. The team is young, the team is strong and I like this.

“I have this good feeling, I cannot explain it, but for sure you’re going to see on the pitch why this was the right choice.”

The versatile defender is capable of playing in both the middle of defence and at left-back but insists he does not care which role he is used in.

He said: “We didn’t speak much about the role. I just want to play and improve.

“We’ll see, also, about the team and which necessity we have. I can play different positions and I don’t care really. I just want to play.”
