Frank Lampard says he does not want to remain as part of the Chelsea coaching setup next season and believes there is a “lot of work to be done” before the club can challenge for trophies again.
The Blues’ 1-0 loss to Premier League Champions Man City was their seventh defeat from nine games since Lampard returned to the club on an interim basis following the decision to sack former boss Graham Potter.
Ex-Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is set to take over at Chelsea ahead of next season, but asked whether he would be interested in remaining at Stamford Bridge, Lampard said: “No, a new manager will come in and bring in his own coaches for sure.
“That’s not something I’ve thought about.”
Chelsea have endured a nightmare first season under their new owners – a consortium made up of Todd Boehly, Clearlake Capital and others, sitting 12th in the league with just one game remaining despite an investment of more than £600m in the playing squad.
And Lampard says that while there is talent in the team, Chelsea’s new boss will have his work cut out trying to get the club back to their previous heights.
“It’s in their hands, I can’t say or predict, I got asked how long will it take? We don’t know,” he said.
“It’s down to the players themselves that we have. For the club, it will be down to the direction they take it forward and for the new coach.
“This Premier League is getting tougher and we’ve felt that this year, and we’ve felt the things we need to improve for next year.
“To get to where Manchester City are, a lot of things have to align, so there’s a lot of work to be done.
“There’s clearly talent in the squad, a lot of young talent in the squad, but maybe a lack of stability and imbalance in the squad.
“Those things are maybe club issues and then every player has to really get their work on to see if they can get us back to where we want to be.”
