Maresca hoping for ‘happy solution’ to Gallagher’s future

Enzo Maresca says he is hoping for a “happy solution” to the uncertainty around the future of midfielder Conor Gallagher.

The England international has turned down Chelsea’s latest contract offer of two years plus a further year option and is reportedly weighing up his future, with Atletico Madrid waiting for a decision on whether the 24-year-old wants to join them after having a bid accepted by the Blues.

Sky Sports say Atletico have set Gallagher a deadline of the end of this week for that decision and that he has been told by new Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca that he will only be a squad player this season.

Gallagher is said to remain open to signing a long-term deal with the Blues but with his current contract up at the end of this season, Maresca says he is hoping for a positive outcome to the situation.

“At the moment, there is not any update on that,” he said on Gallagher’s future.

“The only thing I can say is that he was in contact with the club to find a solution. I don’t think it’s something new.

“In football, every summer, different clubs have some problems with some players, and then at the end, they find a solution and everyone is happy. Hopefully the same can happen in this situation.”
