Pochettino: Chelsea injuries ‘not only bad luck’ with several facing late fitness tests ahead of Arsenal

Mauricio Pochettino says Chelsea’s injury problems are “not only bad luck”, with several players again potentially set to miss out this weekend against Arsenal.

The Blues struggled with injury issues last season and at the start of the new campaign, often leaving Pochettino with limited options in certain positions.

But the Chelsea boss says the club are doing everything they can to improve the situation.

“It’s not only bad luck,” Pochettino explained.

“It’s the profile of players sometimes, the history. We can assess and when we arrive here, you start to see every single situation.

“Of course it’s not only bad luck, sometimes it’s many factors that have an influence.

“We are professional. We try to find the best method and to bring these platforms and tools to the players to be strong and feel good.

“I think it’s only a matter of time because this organisation is new, the team is new, everything is new in this club. It’s about (getting) to know each other and to try and assess the players in the right way, to provide them with the best tools to improve, and to help them to feel strong.”

Nicolas Jackson, Axel Disasi and Reece James will all need to be assessed ahead of the game against Arsenal on Saturday before it can be determined whether they are able to be involved.

Striker Armando Broja has been ruled out of the clash completely, meanwhile, leaving Pochettino with a potential problem up top should Jackson also be unavailable.

“Broja is out because he irritated his knee a little bit, his other knee not the one that was a problem in the past,” Pochettino explained.

“We have a few players that we need to assess to see if tomorrow they can be available, can play or can be on the bench, or maybe out of the list.

“Benoit (Badiashile) can maybe be available to be on the bench.

“James was training good in the last few days and I think now it’s to talk to the medical staff and everything and decide if he can be part of the squad tomorrow.

“Enzo trained yesterday, Caicedo arrived yesterday in the afternoon and was checking with the doctor, he was in a very good state. Today they trained with the group and I think they are ready.”
