Guardiola on record against Man Utd: ‘I didn’t expect it’

Pep Guardiola admits he did not expect to dominate the Manchester derby as his Manchester City side have done since he took over as manager of the club.

City’s 3-0 win over their rivals was the seventh time Guardiola has won with the club at Old Trafford in all competitions as Erling Haaland scored twice before setting up Phil Foden to secure a comfortable victory.

But Guardiola says he has been surprised by City’s record against United since taking over but credits the organisation of the club for their continued success against their rivals.

“I know what we have done,” Guardiola explained.

“I don’t know what United have done because I’m not there but I didn’t expect it, honestly.

“When I arrive here it was Jose Mourinho, with Ibrahimovic, with top, top players, Lukaku.

“I said many times, we are in the same direction. The chairman, the CEO, the sport director, the manager and the players.

“Wrong or right it doesn’t matter, we go there. We make mistakes of course but when we lose or the situation is not going well, we are not here to find to blame someone or the reason why, just what do we have to do better? What happened?

“The opponents are getting better? We are getting worse? What do we have to do to find solutions? That is nice.

“We find the way to do it and we have done it since day one. First season we didn’t win but I didn’t feel my chairman complain, absolutely not. They support me unconditionally.

“I remember when we lost the final of the Champions League against Chelsea, we were devastated, I was, and the chairman said we are going to win it. Sooner or later, we are going to win it.

“With that, everybody feels the club relies on me, the players know I rely on them. When this happens, we are not incredibly overexcited when we win and when we lose it’s not dramatic, it’s not we are going to kill ourselves. No.”
