‘A big blow’ – Arsenal dealt more bad injury news ahead of Newcastle

Emile Smith-Rowe has been ruled out for a number of weeks with a knee injury, Mikel Arteta confirmed.

The 23-year-old missed the Carabao Cup defeat to West Ham earlier this week and now joins Gabriel Jesus and Thomas Partey on the injury list for the Gunners.

“Nothing’s changed. As I said, I think he will be out for weeks,” the Arsenal boss said.

“How many will obviously be determined by how he progresses in the first few weeks especially.

“It’s a big blow because he was getting some momentum and some minutes and really starting to get the Emile that we needed but unfortunately he’s going to be out again.”

Captain Martin Odegaard could return to the side, however, having been left on the bench for the entirety of Arsenal’s 5-0 win over Sheffield United last weekend before coming on as an 80th minute substitute in the loss to West Ham.

“We have tried to load him a little bit because he had a little issue,” Arteta said.

“He felt much better in the last few days. We gave him a few minutes against West Ham which was good to see and his contribution was really good.

“He will train today and if he’s fine, he will be ready.”

Arsenal remain unbeaten in the Premier League this season but having been knocked out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, Arteta is keen to see an immediate response from his side.

“It is still always there. Any time you have a defeat it takes a few days to get over but the full focus is on Newcastle now,” he said.

“There are things we have to do much better in the game, especially the way we conceded the goals, but I don’t think the scoreline reflects what happened in the game at all. But we should have done much better.”
