Akanji: Treble would be ‘unbelievable’ achievement, Silva hails ‘magic’ night

Manuel Akanji says it would be an “unbelievable” achievement to win the treble with Man City and hailed his side’s 4-0 hammering of Real Madrid as one of the best team performances he has ever been involved in.

A first-half double from Bernardo Silva followed by goals from Akanji and substitute Julian Alvarez ensured City cruised into the final of the Champions League, where they will face Inter Milan.

City could wrap up the Premier League title this weekend and will also face rivals Manchester United in the final of the FA Cup ahead of their Champions League final, meaning they could become the first club since United in 1999 to win that treble.

And Akanji, who is in his first season at the club having signed last summer, has backed City to achieve it.

“It would be unbelievable,” he said.

“It’s my first season here. It’s the best team I’ve ever played in and we’re really confident.

“I think the second part of the season we’ve done a really good job but we have to keep it up until the end.

“First we’ve got to win the Premier League which we can do the weekend I hope. I hope we’re going to do it, there’s two finals and we want to win both of them.”

Silva got City off to a flying start when he finished off an excellent move, before adding another with his close-range header soon after.

The 28-year-old has played a key role in his side’s run to the final having also scored in the quarter-final first leg win over Bayern Munich, and hailed the victory over Real Madrid as “magical”.

“To put in the performance that we did, individually and collectively, it was magic,” he said.

“We are so happy, to give back to the club and the supporters is the most important thing and makes this game so beautiful. It was a special night for us and is very emotional to have this opportunity again.

“It was disappointing last season and we tried to learn from the mistakes that we made. I think even though in the first game we weren’t at our best, we knew we had the second game at home.

“We were fantastic and we’re very happy. Hopefully this year we can change the outcome of what happened two years ago.”
