Ange on late goals: I really don’t care when we concede

Ange Postecoglou says he has no interest when Tottenham concede their goals, even if it’s in the last minutes of a game.

Last weekend, Everton scored in the 94th minute to snatch a point against Tottenham at Goodison Park, in a game that Postecoglou’s side dominated for large parts. They had a number of chances in the game to extend their lead but were made to regret their wastefulness late on.

With eight goals conceded in second-half stoppage time, Spurs have already let in more late goals in Postecoglou’s first season in charge than they ever have before in a Premier League campaign.

Jarrad Branthwaite’s last-gasp equaliser for Everton meant that Spurs have also now conceded goals in the 90th minute or later than any other team in the league. It’s an unwanted record and it has ultimately raised concerns regarding Spurs’ game management, but Postecoglou is not overly worried and doesn’t care about the late goals his side are letting in.

“It’s disappointing to concede goals late. It’s disappointing to concede goals early. Either side of half-time is not great, around the 70th-minute mark you get disappointed. Mate, I don’t care, I really don’t care. I get it, people will want to analyse it but that’s fine, we’re always going to be a team that scores goals or concede goals late.

“The way we want to close out games is by going and scoring more goals so that’s not going to satisfy everyone and certainly the statisticians’ heads will explode when we explain it that way but it’s just the team we want to be and it’s still the most important thing for me.

“What we haven’t done so far and what we won’t do is jump at shadows of trying to fix what the current potential issue is. We’re still building a team here and a way of playing and for me that’s the most important thing.”
