‘Standards that nobody has been able to replicate’ – Arteta on Premier League title race

Mikel Arteta admits his Arsenal side will have to improve if they are to win the Premier League over Manchester City and Liverpool this season.

City have been crowned Champions in five of the last six seasons with Liverpool winning it in 2020, and the points tally each team has accumulated has often been in the high 90s, with Guardiola’s side reaching 100 points back in 2018 and Liverpool collecting 99 points in 2020.

Arsenal were in contention for the title last season, leading the league all the way up to the start of April before their campaign derailed, and City eventually won the league by five points.

Just two points separate third-placed Arsenal and leaders Liverpool, with City wedged in between in second. Klopp’s Liverpool side take on Guardiola’s City at Anfield on Sunday and Arteta believes the Gunners will have to set their own records if they are to win the league.

He said: “We are third at the moment. We are competing with, as I said before, two of the most successful clubs in Europe in the last decade.

“They have broken every record in the history of this league, and they have set the standards that nobody else has been able to replicate. What we have to do is improve and be better than them.

“The demands and the amount of points going to be needed is so high. I enjoy fighting for big trophies in this period and we want to continue to do the same when we get to May.”
