Chelsea confirm Fofana has undergone surgery after rupturing ACL

Wesley Fofana’s season could be over before it’s even started with the Chelsea defender having undergone surgery after rupturing his ACL.

The France international was not named in Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the United States while he waited for further assessment on the injury.

And Chelsea have now revealed that the defender has undergone surgery on his knee.

“Defender Wesley Fofana has undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery,” the club said in a statement.

“The 22-year-old did not travel to America for the club’s pre-season tour due to specialist medical assessments, which unfortunately confirmed that an operation would be required.

“Wesley will now begin his recovery and work with the club’s medical department at Cobham during his rehabilitation phase.”

It comes as a blow for new manager Mauricio Pochettino who has been tasked with revitalising a wounded team following last season’s disappointing 12th placed finish.

Fofana, who joined the Blues last summer in a £70m move from Leicester City, suffered an injury-hit first campaign at Stamford Bridge and had been hoping to kick on this year.

The 22-year-old defender must now contend with the possibility of his season being over given the news.
