Sancho NOT set to return to Manchester United squad despite ten Hag response

Manchester United are hoping to welcome back Sergio Reguilon to the squad for their Champions League clash with FC Copenhagen, not Jadon Sancho as Erik ten Hag appeared to suggest in his press conference.

Reguilon missed out through illness for Saturday’s 2-1 win over Sheffield United but the United boss is hoping he will be fit enough to return having missed the last few weeks through injury, leaving ten Hag with limited options at left-back due to Luke Shaw also being injured.

There was confusion immediately following the press conference with ten Hag appearing to suggest it was Sancho who could be returning to the squad.

The forward continues to be excluded because of a rift with ten Hag following his reponse to being left out of the team against Arsenal earlier in the season.

But United have since clarified that it was Reguilon that ten Hag was discussing: “Yes we hope, I said it also last Friday – Sergio.

“He got ill for Saturday. He was fit and trained all week, last week and yesterday he was back in training.

“Today he will train and then we have to assess if he is ready, game fit, or if he can be involved in the squad. So we have to wait for that.”

ten Hag also paid tribute to the late Sir Bobby Charlton who passed away at the weekend.

Manchester United will play at Old Trafford for the first time since his passing on what is set to be an emotional night in the Champions League.

“Firstly we want to win and pay tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton; you always want to do that in a certain way and that is what we are aiming for,” ten Hag said.

“I was happy Saturday that we could show a tribute with a win but also the way we scored that second goal.

“He is in front of Old Trafford with Denis Law and George Best, he is always with us. A huge inspiration for us every day so in every game.

“In difficult moments, moments of adversity around Manchester United, the fans are still with us and we are with the fans. We are fighting together.

“Definitely tomorrow after the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, their hero, the legend, the giant, I’m sure they will be even more emotional, I expect.”
