Five things we learned from Arsenal 2-1 Wolves

Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to four points after defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1.

Victory for the Gunners ensured Mikel Arteta’s side remain top of the Premier League for another week, with key rivals set to face each other.

Here are five talking points from another Arsenal win…

Super Saka impressive season continues

It is fair to say Bukayo Saka is probably on his way to winning Arsenal’s player of the season. His opener against Wolves brought up his 36th goal for the Gunners in the Premier League, overtaking Cesc Fabregas in the process. His fifth goal of the league campaign ensured the Englishman joins Mohammed Salah as the only other player to score or assist in ten Premier League games this season. Key for club and country, it is amazing that Saka is still only 22-years-old.

Captain Odegaard back on form

After picking up a goal in midway against RC Lens, Martin Odegaard continued his goalscoring renaissance against Wolves. The Gunners captain popped with Arsenal’s second of the match, finishing off a superb passing move to put his side firmly in control. After a season compromised by injury and poor form, the Norwegian international appears to have put his demons behind him at a crucial time for his club.

Arsenal hold on to extend lead at the top

Although Arsenal’s main rivals do not play until Sunday, the pressure on them has been ramped up after the Gunners victory. The win moves Mikel Arteta’s men four points clear of Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola’s side facing Tottenham in a top of the table clash. With Thomas Partey, Jurrien Timber set to return to a near fully fit squad, the north London side will be even harder to beat come the business end of the season.

Sloppy mistakes almost cost Arsenal

Despite dominating the match, Arsenal almost threw it all away late on when Matheus Cunha smashed home in the 86th minute to give Wolves a lifeline. Oleksandr Zinchenko fluffed his lines on the edge of the Gunners box and the subsequent interception fell kindly to Wolves Brazilian forward to smash home. Arteta’s side had been warned of the potential Gary O’Neil’s men possessed going forward in the first half, and eventually let slip having been sound defensively all game.

Tomiyasu injury sours strong win

Takehiro Tomiyasu’s Arsenal resurgence has been nothing short than impressive. The Japanese international has cemented his place in Mikel Arteta’s side after a splendid last couple of months from the 25-year-old. But after assisting Bukayo Saka’s early opener and enjoying another positive display in front of his home fans, Tomiyasu pulled up with an injury and was replaced by Ben White. A shame for the fullback after looking undroppable in recent matches.
