Thomas Frank is backing David Raya to help take Arsenal to the next level and admits the goalkeeper has probably played his last game for Brentford.
The Spanish shot stopper joined the Gunners on an initial loan deal in the summer with the option to make the move permanent and has displaced Aaron Ramsdale as the club’s number one in his short spell with the club so far.
Raya is unable to play against his parent club when the two sides meet tomorrow and Bees boss Frank says that, despite a mixed start to life in north London, Raya can make a big difference this season and beyond.
“The criticism I don’t know about because I haven’t followed that,” Frank said.
“I know David, of course, inside and out and one of the things that always impressed me is his mentality, and especially his mentality to cope with mistakes.
“If he makes a mistake, he moves on because in life and in football you make a lot of mistakes.
“Keepers, if they make a mistake, no matter who they are, it’s crucial. He’s always been a person and a keeper that’s moved on quick and I think that’s a huge skillset in elite football.
“And yes, I think he’s got the skillset to be, well he is a top keeper, he’s playing for Arsenal, one of the best teams in the world, but to keep improving and do very well for Arsenal.”
Raya has started the last eight Premier League games for Arsenal as well as every single one of the team’s Champions League games, and Frank says he does not expect the goalkeeper to play for Brentford again.
“I think it would be a surprise if he hasn’t (played his last game),” Frank added.
“I think it makes sense. He came there and is playing almost every minute for them so that’s what I expect.
“If not, then we have another good keeper back.”
