Guehi ‘comfortable’ with England and hoping to keep impressing

Marc Guehi says he feels he has settled in well for England after completing 90 minutes for Gareth Southgate’s side in the 2-0 win over Malta.

The Crystal Palace defender started alongside Harry Maguire in the centre of defence as a Malta own goal and Harry Kane strike saw the Three Lions comfortably secure victory, confirming their place as winners of their European Championships qualification group.

With John Stones out for the long-term through injury, there is a spot in the starting 11 open next to Maguire, with Lewis Dunk, Fikayo Tomori, Ezri Konsa and Levi Colwill also among those vying for a spot in Southgate’s team.

But Guehi says he is comfortable with how he has played and hopes to keep impressing.

“Since I’ve come here after, I’ve always felt comfortable because the team makes you feel comfortable regardless of whether you’re playing games or not,” he said.

“We’ve got such a good culture here that whoever comes in the team comes in and gets up to speed really quickly and feels comfortable around the lads.

“I’m just grateful to be given the chance and to be helped by so many top players.”

The 23-year-old also credited his defensive partner and Manchester United man Maguire for helping him to settle into this England side.

“He’s such an experienced player. He makes things a lot easier for me, and (so do) all the experienced lads,” Guehi added.

“If you’re someone who comes in and hasn’t played too many games, it’s those players around you that make it easier for you. Credit to all of them.”
