Gvardiol happy to be on Haaland’s team ahead of reunion with RB Leipzig

Josko Gvardiol says he is happy he no longer has to face Erling Haaland in the Champions League ahead of Man City’s meeting with RB Leipzig on Tuesday.

City have already secured qualification to the knock-out stages but could effectively win the group if they draw with Leipzig in their penultimate group game.

Guardiola’s side smashed Gvardiol’s Leipzig 7-0 away from home in the round of 16 last season thanks to five goals from Haaland.

And the defender, who joined City in the summer, says he’s happy to be on the other side this time around.

“I’m happy to be his team-mate,” Gvardiol said.

“It wasn’t just about Haaland, it was the first XI on the pitch, it was a hard game.

“For me as a centre-back I was really looking forward to facing Haaland but in the end it didn’t finish good. He scored five goals in 60 minutes. When I saw him getting subbed off I was like ‘yeah, finally’.

“But I’m happy to be part of this team and being surrounded with amazing players is something some people can’t imagine. I need to take every day to learn from the best.

“You never know what will happen next season. Just use every day to make yourself better.”
