‘It is amazing, 39 years old and still playing like a 20-year-old’ – Poch hails Thiago Silva’s longevity

Mauricio Pochettino gave high praise to Thiago Silva, who is still performing at the highest level in the Premier League at the age of 39.

Silva, even at his age is still getting plenty of minutes on the pitch, completing 90 minutes in four of Chelsea’s last five games.

The Brazilian’s contract expires in the summer, which could spell the end of his stint in West London. Silva has been at the club since joining on a free transfer in 2020.

“It is amazing, 39 years old and still playing like a 20-year-old. He brings his experience to the team, and he is doing really well”, said Pochettino.

“It has been a big, big week. Next year we start in a positive way, and it is a good feeling to finish 2023 in this way.”

Chelsea now have back-to-back Premier League wins, following their disappointing Christmas Eve defeat to Wolves.

A brace from Cole Palmer and an assist to set up Noni Madueke was enough for Chelsea to hold off hosts Luton who mounted a late comeback.

Despite another turbulent year, Chelsea have finished 2023 strong, and move into the top half of the Premier League.

“In the first half we controlled very well, second half we started to concede crosses and corners. For us at 3-0 the game looks over but in the Premier League it’s never over. We need to show more capacity to manage this type of situation”, said the Chelsea boss.

“I am so happy because we are talking about our young squad and players who are showing they have the quality to perform in our team.”
