Jurgen Klopp says he is “really happy” to complete the signing of “late bloomer” Wataru Endo, writes Nazira Yusuf.
Liverpool have finalised the signing of Endo from Stuttgart for an estimated fee of £16.2 million.
The Japan international has signed a four-year contract and will wear the number three shirt vacated by Fabinho.
After missing out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, Endo becomes Liverpool’s third summer signing and provides a much-needed boost to their midfield.
And Klopp says his consistent record of being available and his role as captain of his national team are just two of the reasons why he wanted to sign the midfielder.
“It’s a really good package and we’re happy to have him,” Klopp said.
“He is a late bloomer. He has improved every year since he was on the proper football screen.
“When he came to Europe, it was not that easy. Now he has 50 games for Japan and I don’t know how many for Stuttgart. On the pitch, he turns into a real monster.
“He was on my screen for a long time already. I am personally really happy about it. Now, let’s start working.”
The Liverpool manager knows there are slight doubts amongst the Liverpool supporters but has reassured them that he has the work ethic and profile to be a successful player at the club
“In football, we close books far too early. That’s the world we are living in,” he added.
“My job is not to explain, our job is to make it happen on the pitch. We will see how much time we need to get used to what we do. I’m really happy these stories are still possible in the world of football.”
