Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa says he always believed his time in the England squad would come.
The 26-year-old has been called up as a late replacement to Gareth Southgate’s group for the European Championships qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia following several withdrawals from the squad.
Konsa has impressed at Aston Villa this season and says he is focused on seizing his opportunity in the hope of earning a place in the squad for next year’s Euros.
“I think that’s every player’s target, to go to major tournaments and play for your country,” Konsa said.
“So that’s definitely on my mind and definitely something I plan on doing.
“I knew I had a lot to work on in my game. Only recently now, the last two seasons, we’ve excelled at Villa and that part of it has helped me become the player I am today.
“I knew my time would come, but it was just a matter of when. I was patient, and I’m proud and me and my family are really happy.
“I’ve always believed in myself, always backed myself. I’m really enjoying my football now at the moment and the rest is taking care of itself.
“I just need to keep doing what I’m doing and stay consistent, hopefully that will get me my chance.”
