Man Utd boss ten Hag backs Rashford and admits team were ‘naive’ in win over Wolves

Erik ten Hag says he has been impressed by Marcus Rashford’s recent form and backed the forward to keep scoring after his side’s 4-3 win over Wolves.

The 26-year-old opened the scoring on his return to the side having missed out against Newport County in the FA Cup due to reporting ill.

Rashford was pictured on a night out in Belfast last week prior to reporting ill, with Erik ten Hag admitting after the FA Cup win that there was a matter to deal with “internally”.

But the England forward was back in the side for their dramatic win over Wolves, with youngster Kobbie Mainoo grabbing a later winner after Pedro Neto had equalised late on.

“I think you’ve seen consistency in the last games,” ten Hag said.

“Three goals and two assists in three or four games. The form is coming.”

Goals from Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund had put United 2-0 up before Pablo Sarabia halved the deficit, only for Scott McTominay to make it 3-1 minutes later.

But ten Hag’s side looked to have thrown away victory when Max Kilman and Neto got Wolves back level, only for Mainoo to score a fine solo goal to win it in the 97th minute.

“I think we played very good, we dictated the game for an hour and we should have gone up 3-0 or 4-0,” ten Hag said.

“But we didn’t and in the end it’s quite naive, the way we concede the goals shouldn’t happen.

“But then we showed resilience and especially Kobbie Mainoo, it’s a great goal.”
