Live updates from Old Trafford as Manchester United host Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup third round.
“That is where we’re at. We can’t hide behind that, we’ve got to face that. And we’ve got to deal with that. And it’s not Manchester United level or what’s expected of Manchester United, but ultimately we have to do something about that. And still, not success, but take a step forward by qualifying for a championship. I keep repeating that, it sounds like a broken record, but there’s still a lot to play for in the league this season. And Champions League place is important for a number of reasons that I don’t need to go into that you guys know.
“And for the players it’s important, and for attracting players it’s important. So on all levels, and for them to feel like this season has achieved an objective of some sort. But I keep saying it, the players have got to step up as well. They need to come together. And they will, and I’ll challenge them to do that. I’ve got enough leaders and experience and quality to do it.”
“I think to describe him best is to say that he’s a role model, role model on the pitch, role model beside the pitch, great connector in the team, prepares well for training, regenerates well afterwards. He’s a role model for all the young players and I think he proved another time that he’s a great goalscorer. He’s there in the right moment.
“I think he missed a big chance in the first half but good goalscorers never give up, they’re always ready and in the moment we needed him, he was there.”
“In the end I think the goal came a little bit out of nowhere, it was a corner, it was a little bit like a lucky punch, and then the dynamic changed again.
“The atmosphere, the environment was chaotic, was loud, but especially in these moments I think my players managed well.”
“I’m very pleased for the club and pleased for the supporters,” said Hurzeler. “They spent a lot of money, they spent a lot of time to do this and therefore I’m really pleased for them and also for the club.”
“I love competitions, I love cup games because it’s always a do or die, so you always have to be on your highest level. It’s most of the time 90 minutes, sometimes 120 minutes to win this game, so I really like these kind of cup competitions.”
It’s all over and Brighton will be the side advancing to the next round of the FA Cup. The Seagulls will have a good opportunity to have a proper run in the cup this season.
For United it is another disappointing home results, in what will surely be remembered as one of their most disappointing seasons. They will play just 40 matches this season, the bare minimum, and have no real chance at lifting any silverware. They remain outsiders for Champions League qualification too.
A deep free-kick is launched forward to Maguire.
He heads at goal but it is straight at Steele, who makes the save. That could be the last chance.
Maguire pushes Kostoulas to the ground.
He is shown a yellow card.
The scorer of the opening goal, Gruda, is taken off.
Watson is on in his place.
Five minutes of injury time have been added.
There is still some kind of hope for the hosts.
A decision goes against Lacey who slams the ball down in frustration.
The referee produces a second yellow card for the youngster and he is sent off.
Sesko almost gets through with a chance to score his second.
The crowd has really come to life now as United desperately search for an equaliser.
United get one back and Sesko finally heads home.
It comes from a corner and Steele gets down but cannot keep it out. The game is back alive now.
Rutter makes way for Kostoulas, who scored off the bench here in October.
Hurzeler must be feeling confident that his side can get this across the line, United have barely tested Steele since going behind.
Another Sesko shot goes straight at Steele.
The Slovenian shoots from the edge of the area but cannot place it well enough.
Lacey tries his luck with a curling left-footed effort directed at the far post.
It is dipping but not fast enough, and lands on the roof of the net.
Ugarte and Martinez are taken off.
Casemiro and Maguire come on.
Welbeck, Gomez and Veltman are withdrawn.
Mitoma, Ayari and Van Hecke are sent on.
A cross comes to Dorgu at the back-post.
The Danish international opts to go for an acrobatic overhead kick. It is a simple save for Steele.
Lacey does well and picks out Sesko with a great cross.
However, the Slovenian heads wide.
The United fans are shouting for their team to attack.
There is nothing to lose at this point.
Dorgu goes down dramatically in the penalty area after a faint touch from Gruda.
The referee tells him to get back to his feet.
Brighton double their lead and of course it is Welbeck against his former club.
United have looked open at the back all afternoon and it is far too easy for Brighton. A simple ball into Welbeck on the edge of the area, who takes a simple touch out of his feet and away from Yoro, before refilling into the top corner.
Mainoo and Mount are replaced by Zirkzee and Lacey.
Lacey receives a huge welcome from the home crowd, who are excited to see the 18-year-old enter the action.
Mainoo brings down Welbeck and is shown the first yellow card of the afternoon.
Perhaps frustration from the 20-year-old, who has not taken his opportunity today.
Should the score remain the same in the final half an hour, then United will play the least possible amount of games this season.
With no European football, knocked out of the League Cup at the first time of asking and potentially facing the same fate in the FA Cup – United would play just 40 games across the entire season.
