LIVE updates from Old Trafford as Manchester United host Newcastle United in the Premier League.
The referee’s whistle brings things to an end and United do hold on for the three points. Newcastle’s second-half performance should have been more than enough to claim the victory, but they did not take their chances and only have themselves to blame for their subpar showing in the first-half.
United move up to fifth, level on points with Chelsea in fourth. A big result for Amorim with a severely depleted squad, and the Reds should enter the new year in a strong position.
Lammens spills one at the back-post.
Fortunately for him, Miley is unable to get the ball under complete control and the goalkeeper eventually claims it.
Lammens comes out and claims a dangerous cross.
Old Trafford erupts with applause for the Belgian. Three minutes remain.
Cunha goes in late on Hall and is shown a yellow card.
United will hope nothing comes from the free-kick.
Seven minutes of injury time have been added on.
United will desperately cling on to their advantage as a final Newcastle onslaught is unleashed.
Miley is the latest Newcastle player to lash an effort wide from a good position.
The visitors are running out of time here and need to make one of these opportunities count.
Amorim makes his final changes as United look to hold on here.
Shaw and Martinez are replaced by Malacia and Fredricson. It is Malaria’s first appearance for the Reds in almost 12 months.
Newcastle pop the ball around brilliantly working an opening.
Miley to Guimaraes to Barnes to Gordon, who blasts over from inside the penalty area.
We are now entering the final ten minutes and United are absolutely hanging on here.
Newcastle have totally dominated the second-half, but still cannot get the ball into the net.
Gordon has Dalot beaten and pulls the ball back to Joelinton.
The Brazilian strikes at goal but it ultimately a pretty tame effort that Lammens keeps hold of.
Lammens flaps at a corner but is relieved to see that the ball has not landed at any Newcastle player’s feet.
The referee’s whistle then awards a United free-kick.
Tonai is now withdrawn by Howe.
Willock comes on in his place.
Martinez takes the free-kick and plays a brilliant ball over the top for Dalot.
The defender controls with his chest, and through one on one, he blasts over the crossbar. He may have been offside anyway had he scored.
Tonali chops down Dorgu as he looks to break away.
The Italian is shown a yellow card for the challenge.
Howe turns to his bench and makes a triple substitution with his side still battling to draw level.
Ramsey, Woltemade and Murphy are replaced by Joelinton, Wissa and Barnes.
Newcastle continue to mount pressure on United’s defence.
This time it is Gordon who finds a way through, but his right-footed effort bends away from goal and rolls just the wrong side of the post.
After a couple of penalty appeals in a short period, VAR takes a look at one of them.
The ball strikes Martinez’ arm in the penalty area, however it is from very close range and no penalty will be awarded.
Newcastle come back up the other end and this time it is the visitors who are denied by the woodwork.
Hall strikes brilliantly from range, beating Lammens, but not beating the crossbar.
Sesko now comes off and that strike is his last contribution.
After some confusion, Casemiro is the other to make way. Zirzkee and Yoro are sent on.
Newcastle lose the ball in their own half and it is played through to Sesko.
The Slovenian produces a stopover before rising a left-footed effort into the crossbar. There would have been question marks over offside had it gone in.
A Newcastle corner drops to Schar at the back-post.
He chests it down and strikes but Dorgu is able to block.
Newcastle have started the second period brightly.
The Magpies have been well on top since the break as they look to bring themselves level.
Cunha takes the kick off for the hosts.
We are underway in the second half!
Mount is withdrawn at half-time, suggesting another injury concern for Amorim to contend with.
Jack Fletcher, son of Darren, is sent on.
The half-time whistle goes with United ahead, exactly the Christmas present that Amorim would have been hoping for from his side. They are depleted in numbers and options, but those on the pitch have stepped up so far.
The biggest concern for Newcastle is how quickly their heads seemed to go down after falling behind. Clearly lacking confidence and belief with their terrible away form, Howe will need to inspire a response in the second-half. They have more than enough quality in their ranks to turn this game around, but not with a performance like that in the first-half.
