Live updates from Manchester City v Real Madrid in the Champions League playoffs from our reporter Stan Smith at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City have lost a home game after leading at half time in the Champions League for the first time since 10 April 2018 against Liverpool (18 games without defeat).
They have conceded seven goals in the final 15 minutes of Champions League matches this season.
Stan Smith:
“Full time 3-2 to Real Madrid. City have shot themselves in the foot. They have played themselves into trouble on two occasions and needlessly given away two goals.
“Both goals were completely avoidable but they have completely turned the tie on its head. City have thrown away their lead and now have a mountain to climb. Real Madrid will be delighted.”
Former Manchester City defender Gael Clichy:
“It’s funny because you can feel it. It’s difficult to defend and you can’t stop thinking of that night [Feyenoord game]. Last 30/35 minutes the legs are gone. Madrid probably deserved to win.”
Full time at the Etihad and Real Madrid win 3-2, what a turnaround for Carlo Ancelotti’s men!
Real Madrid have done!
Man City the architects of their own downfall, Mateo Kovacic’s poor pass, Rico Lewis’ slow reactions and Ederson running out of his area.
Vinicius Jr lobs the Brazilian keeper, before Bellingham runs onto the ball and taps it in.
Mbappe is off, Fran Garcia is on.
Three more minutes.
Stan Smith:
“City looked like they had done enough to win the first leg. However they have just gifted Madrid a second equaliser.
“Ederson is at fault for a totally needless goal that could prove costly for the home side.
“City must now look to regain the lead for a third time with just minutes remaining or head to the Bernabeu with the scores level.”
Four minutes to go and Real equalise!
Ederson’s poor kick gives the ball back to the visitors, and then proceeds to parry Vinicius Jr’s shot into the path of former City player Diaz to score.
Kevin De Bruyne and Savinho are off.
They’re replaced by Omar Marmoush and Ilkay Gundogan.
Real replace Rodrygo with Brahim Diaz.
And City are in front once again.
Cool as you like from Haaland, who rolls the ball into the bottom left corner.
Manchester City have a penalty!
Foden is brought down by Ceballos and the referee has no choice but to award the spot kick.
The City forward is down in considerable pain.
It’s been a crazy second half so far, but the match has slowed down.
Asencio and Haaland have been called over by the referee for a talking to.
What a let off for City!
The ball is played to Bellingham who gets away from Lewis, but his first time shot is saved well by Ederson.
Stan Smith:
“Real Madrid are level and it has been coming. A stroke of luck for the Spanish side in the buildup to the goal but it is deserved.
“City now have half an hour left to keep Madrid out and to try and build an advantage that they can take to the Bernabéu next week.”
And just like that Real are level, and who else?
A freekick from the visitors hits the wall, before Dani Ceballos picks the ball up and chips it to Mbappe who miskicks the ball with his shin, but it deceives everyone and floats into the goal.
It was like watching it in slow motion!
Game on!
Another Ederson save to deny Mbappe, who has probably been Real’s biggest threat.
The resulting corner leads to nothing.
Rico Lewis loses his first battle with Vinicius Jr.
The Brazilian rounds the fullback before crossing to Jude Bellingham, but the midfielder’s header goes wide of the post.
Not even a minute into the second half and City almost double their advantage!
Haaland bends a shot towards goal and it bounces off the bar.
Not the start Real were looking for.
Manuel Akanji is off, and Rico Lewis replaces him.
We’re back underway!
Stan Smith:
“Half-time and City lead 1-0. Both teams have had their moments as the game has ebbed and flowed. John Stones has been masterful so far and key to City’s play.
“They look like a different side with him back in the lineup. Real Madrid’s front four have remained dangerous and shown glimpses of their quality.”
Half time at the Etihad.
Man City have been the better team for much of the half and are deservedly ahead. Real have had chances to score but have been unable to take them.
Mbappe is teed up by Eduardo Camavinga and the Frenchman’s shot takes a huge deflection off Ake and flies narrowly wide.
Tense times for the hosts.
We have four more minutes in this first half…
