Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has called on Noni Madueke to improve his performances in training after the winger scored in his side’s 5-1 demolition of Southampton.
Madueke returned to the Chelsea starting line-up against the Saints and netted his team’s third goal of the game, but afterwards Maresca said he wants to see an improvement from the winger.
“With Noni I have a personal relationship, in terms of he can do much more,” Maresca said. “In the moment that he starts to score or assist and is happy, he starts to drop a little bit.
“The reason he was not playing [against Aston Villa] is because I don’t like the way he trained. He has to understand that he has to train every day good, he has to be ambitious. If he scores one tonight, he has to go for the second one, the third one.
“He has to be ambitious, to give more assists. But overall, he’s doing great, he’s doing fantastic. He’s doing even better in terms of numbers, in assists and goals. But Noni has to understand he has to work more because he can be much, much, much better.”
Chelsea fans sang ‘we’ve got our Chelsea back’ with their team leading against Southampton and Maresca said he was delighted to hear the fans’ happiness: “It was a very good feeling especially because you can see that they are happy. That is our target and why we work every day, to keep them happy.
“Tonight was a very good feeling and especially the one that they can see Chelsea is back, this is the important thing.”
