‘Needs to improve a lot’ – Spurs fans left unconvinced by new goalkeeper Vicario’s display

Spurs fans were left unconvinced by new goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario’s performance in their pre-season defeat to West Ham.

Vicario joined the club from Empoli last month for an initial £17.2m as a replacement for the outgoing Hugo Lloris, who wants to leave the club this summer.

Spurs were beaten 3-2 by London rivals West Ham in a pre-season friendly in Australia as Gianluca Scamacca scored a late winner for David Moyes’s side.

Second-half goals from Giovani Lo Celso and Destiny Udogie had levelled the score at 2-2 after Danny Ings and Divin Mubama had put West Ham 2-0 up at half-time in Ange Postecoglou’s first game in charge of Tottenham.

Postecoglou’s side had 32 shots at goal to West Ham’s seven and dominated possession of the ball but looked frail at the back as they lost to the Hammers.

The Spurs boss was left encouraged by the display, however.

“From my perspective that’s what we were looking for tonight,” he said.

“We’ve obviously been working really hard in training and I didn’t expect the lads to be super sharp because this is the stage where you’re getting your conditioning but we have been working on stuff.

“We want to see some of that out there and I think in both halves there was a real willingness from the boys to try to put in place the stuff we’ve been working on.

“At times it looked good but we’re still very much in the infancy of trying to establish the way we want to play and our structures.”

New signing Vicario played the first half of the game, with Spurs fans also getting to see a first glimpse of fellow newbies James Maddison and Manor Solomon.

But it was proved to be a difficult first outing for Vicario, who failed to react quick enough to keep out a header from Ings before passing the ball out of play to give away the corner which led to the second goal.

And many Spurs fans took to Twitter to raise concerns about their new goalkeeper…
