Live updates from St James’ Park as Newcastle host Tottenham in the Carabao Cup fourth round.
That’s all from us here at St. James’ Park this evening. Thanks for tuning in. Goodnight!
Thomas Frank has just spoken to the media in his post-match press conference. Here are some of the main talking points:
On the game:
“I think it was a very even game, and small margins decided it. We created some really big chances but Ramsdale made some really good saves. Overall I’m happy with the performance but super disappointed we’re out of the cup.”
On Vicario, who did not feature this evening:
“He’s ready for Chelsea.”
On the refereeing decisions, Frank said:
“We conceded two goals because of two mistakes. Unfortunately the referee was part of the mistake for the first goal. It’s common sense to allow Djed Spence to put his boot back on. That was a big mistake.”
On his team selection:
“It was very difficult to be honest. It’s a balance to make a competitive team while also rotating players.”
And finally on Archie Gray, who missed out on the squad tonight:
“He got a contact injury on the calf in Monaco and then picked up a calf strain. He would have for sure started tonight.”
Eddie Howe has just spoken to the media in his post-match press conference, here are the main talking points:
On the game:
“The performance was really pleasing, it’s a real testament to the squad.”
On Sandro Tonali and his POTM performance:
“He’s had a nasty illness and it knocked him, but today was the right time to bring him back into the squad and I’m delighted with him.”
On players making their case to be regular starters, Howe said:
“There was a real necessity for the individuals to perform. It’s a really hard group to break into. I’m very pleased for Willock, it was not lost on us coaching staff what a good player he is. Today he looked really good and really fit.”
On Aaron Ramsdale:
“Aaron was very good tonight. I’m really pleased with him and he had a big save in the second half. There’s been no hint of frustration or negativity that he hasn’t played and he’s been really positive.”
On this season and how much he is enjoying it:
“So far so good!”
Full time Newcastle 2, Tottenham 0. The hosts sail through to the quarter finals of the EFL Cup, as they continue their quest to retain their title. Thomas Frank’s Tottenham offered little to cheer for the visiting fans, as Newcastle steamrolled their way through the North London outfit. Tottenham’s recent struggles at St. James’ Park continue, and Spurs head back to London once more empty handed. A tale of two headers, courtesy of Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade proved the difference makers as Newcastle comfortably saw off Tottenham at St. James’ Park. North East misery once more for Spurs, and the Magpies go marching on! Stay tuned for both managers’ reactions here.
We will have four minutes added time to see out the game.
Elanga OFF Gordon ON
Kudus is also shown a yellow card.
Joelinton is shown a yellow card.
It’s a scuffle for Joelinton and Kudus as the former clatters into the Spurs player in a horribly mistimes challenge. Kudus’ reaction is just as incendiary however, and both may be shown a yellow here.
Newcastle are really having fun here, with tricks galore as they see out this impressive victory. Spurs seem to offer no chance of coming back here.
Ramsey OFF Guimaraes ON
Richarlison OFF Tel ON
It’s all Newcastle as it stands. Another corner to the hosts to follow.
As things stand Spurs will extend their losing streak at St. James’ Park. Despite a few chances here and there, the visitors have looked the far superior team this evening.
Woltemade OFF Osula ON
Willock OFF Joelinton ON
Krafth OFF Trippier ON
Tonali to take.
Bentancur OFF Kolo Muani ON
Johnson OFF Kudus ON
Thomas Frank seems to be looking to his bench to change the outcome of this game, as Randal Kolo Muani looks set to come on for the visitors.
Pape Sarr’s eyes will have lit up with that chance, as Simons tees him up for his signature edge of the box finish. Ramsdale does well and parries it out, with a corner for Spurs to follow.
Fabian Schar is shown a yellow card.
Some great play from Newcastle as Joe Willock is set away on the counter attack. Willock is unable to get it out from under his feet, however, and settles for a shot outside the box which is fired over.
Porro to take. Spurs could really do with a magic moment here.
Tonali fouls Simons, setting up a set piece for Porro to whip into the Newcastle box.
Two headers, two goals! And who else would it be other than 2m tall Nick Woltemade? The German giant towers above the Spurs defenders to meet the lofted cross from Willock and heads it over Kinsky to make it 2-0! Spurs with a mountain to climb!
Newcastle get the second half underway.
