Nicolas Jackson: I hope I can be like Drogba!

New Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson is hoping to emulate the achievements of one of the club’s greatest-ever strikers, Didier Drogba, after scoring his first goal for the club.

Jackson joined the Blues last month from Villarreal after a breakout season in La Liga where he notched 12 goals.

The forward has impressed Mauricio Pochettino in his early weeks at the club and a goal and two assists in the pre-season friendly victory over Brighton last night only added to the Chelsea manager’s excitement.

And speaking to reporters afterwards, Jackson admitted he has big ambitions of achieving similar things as Chelsea legend Drogba.

“It feels great but I don’t want to compare myself with him because he is a legend,” Jackson said.

“Unless I do what he has done, that’s when I will compare myself to him. I hope I can be like him.”

Pochettino acknowledged that Jackson will need more time to fully integrate himself into the Chelsea squad but is pleased by the early progression made by the 22-year-old.

“I think when Chelsea sign a player like him it’s because Chelsea detect and see importance, see quality and see talent,” he explained.

“Last season he finished playing really well and of course, he’s a big talent. He needs time to adapt to the new club.

“These type of games are important for him to feel what it means to play in the Premier League but he has big talent, he’s young also.

“For sure we need to help him to develop and to evolve and to improve and be an important player for Chelsea in the future – not only in the present.”
