‘Part of the pain of football’ – Postecoglou disappointed with late defeat

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou expressed his disappointment after his side fell to a second consecutive defeat in the Premier League, with a 2-1 loss against Wolves.

Brennan Johnson had given an injury and suspension hit Spurs the perfect start after just three minutes, but two goals in added time turned the game around for the hosts, as Wolves stole all three points at Molineux.

Spurs missed the chance to go back to the top of the table, but were hindered by some noticeable absentees. Postecoglou praised his players efforts despite taking nothing from the game

“Yeah, disappointed obviously, particularly after it happened so late, but it’s part of the pain of football and when things happen in those circumstances you have just got to take it”, Postecoglou said.

“I cannot fault the players’ effort or commitment. It was always going to be a tough game anyway at Wolves. We just couldn’t hold out.”

Emerson Royal, Ben Davies and Eric Dier were all drafted into the starting eleven as Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie are currently serving suspensions, while Micky van de Ven and James Maddison missed out as well due to injury.

It was a makeshift line-up for Tottenham who even after an ideal start, never had full control of the game. Postecoglou highlighted these mitigating circumstances, after Mario Lemina’s last minute winner left Spurs empty handed.

“The first half I just felt that we started well but we could have been a bit more positive and be a little bit more aggressive with the ball”, said the Spurs boss.

“I’ve got to temper that with the fact that we have made so many changes and we are not going to get the same type of fluency, especially when particularly three of your back four are virtually starting for the first time.

“We’ve made a couple of changes as well further up and it’s not going to be as fluent but I just felt we could have been more positive, especially in the first half.”
