Pep ‘did not want to take a risk’ with De Bruyne in vital Premier League win

Pep Guardiola did not want to risk playing Kevin De Bruyne against Brentford after the Belgium international did not feature in City’s crucial 1-0 win at the Etihad.

Erling Haaland’s goal was enough to take all three points in City’s game in hand. De Bruyne was an unused substitute and was not given any minutes as a precaution. Guardiola confirmed De Bruyne had “niggles” in his hamstring.

“I did not want to take any risk with him. He is okay, it was more about prevention. He said he did not feel comfortable and the doctors said not to take a risk”, said Guardiola.

Guardiola made only two substitutions all throughout the game as the Champions edged past their west London opponents. This win takes them within one point of leaders Liverpool after 25 games played. With Arsenal a point behind in third, it is shaping up to be an enthralling title race.

The City boss also spoke of Haaland’s strength of character, bouncing back from injury and scoring goals, but also playing against Brentford despite a recent family bereavement.

Never, ever criticise your top scorer, he will shout you down! Sooner or later he is there. Comes from two months out, had an incredible, tough week last week, he lost his grandmother”, Guardiola said.

“Haaland is not in his best shape, but it’s normal after two months [out].”

“I am in love with these players, with this team. What more can I say?”
