Pochettino: You need to deliver from day one at Chelsea

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino rejected the suggestion that it will take time for him to be successful at Chelsea – insisting he is focused on “delivering from day one”.

The Blues endured a dismal last season, finishing 12th in the Premier League under Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and then Frank Lampard.

But former Spurs boss Pochettino says he knows there is pressure to succeed straight away despite the significant number of changes made at the club over the past year.

“In football, there is no patience,” he said, speaking at his first press conference as Chelsea manager.

“In football, it’s difficult to wait. When you are here at Chelsea, it’s not about asking for time. You need to deliver it from day one.

“I think that is how we are working now in the training ground, it’s not to give too much time to the players to think or to spend time wasting time.

“It’s about delivery from now and to give our best.

“Football is about today, or yesterday. We cannot talk too much about the long term. We cannot tell people we need six months to create something, I think that’s not good.

“We need to create the belief from the beginning, and I think we are going to have a squad of players that can deliver in the job and give what we expect.

“And from the day one, we need to think about winning. Then if we don’t win or it’s little by little or we need more time to develop our idea, then maybe it’s possible that after we will tell you.”

Chelsea have let a number of key players go this summer – including Mason Mount to Man Utd, Kai Havertz to Arsenal and Mateo Kovacic to Man City – following a transfer spend of more than £600m across the previous two transfer windows under the club’s new ownership.

The Blues have moved to bring in Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson and are also hoping to reach a deal for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo as Pochettino looks to build a more competitive squad, and the new Blues boss says there will be more incomings.

“For me, it’s clear now that the most important thing is to finish the squad, to have a very balanced squad,” he said.

“I think the club, in their plans, was to reduce (the squad) also, the number of players. I think that for me is the most important thing, to find the right profiles for the players that we are going to add.

“We are working really hard now, and I really trust in Paul (Winstanley) and Laurence (Stewart), and the owners.”
