The referee blows for full-time and Arsenal are safely into the hat for the next round – they will find out their next opponents shortly.
It was not a vintage performance from the Gunners, who had the capabilities to blow away their lower league opposition. Nevertheless Eze’s first Arsenal goal was enough for the win, with substitute Trossard securing the victory in the closing moments. Arteta’s side remain in the cup and that is the most important thing.
Four minutes have been added on at the end of the 90.
Arsenal are home and dry here, but they will look to add another.
They took their time but Arsenal finally add a second to their lead.
The ball is played long over the top by Saliba for Trossard, and with home fans adamant that he was in an offside position, the Belgian calmly fires home into the bottom corner. Game over.
Arteta also makes his final changes ahead of the last ten minutes.
Martinelli and Eze make way for Trossard and Rice.
Vale’s final change sees earlier substitute Clark forced off the pitch by injury.
He is replaced by Ojo.
Dowman plays an amazing ball over the top of the Vale defence and into the path of Gyokeres.
Arsenal’s striker first at goal but it is well blocked by a recovering defender.
After a misplaced pass comes his way, Cole drives towards the Arsenal box before unleashing a shot from just outside.
It is struck well and dipping but flies just over Kepa’s crossbar.
As it stands, Arsenal are continuing to control this match.
However if the score remains the same, then Vale will surely throw everything they have at grabbing an equaliser in the final minutes.
Arsenal respond with a double change of their own with Gyokeres and Gabriel replacing Merino and White.
Arteta does not want to see this game go to penalties.
Vale’s latest substitutions see Paton and Curtis replaced by Stockley and Cole.
They can sense an opportunity.
Hall and Gabriel are replaced by Garrity and Clark for the hosts.
The longer the scoreline remains same, the more Vale’s hope of snatching a result will grow.
Saka comes off just after the hour mark and it is Dowman who replaces him.
Given the timing of the substitution, it was likely pre-planned by Arteta, although he perhaps expected to be further ahead at this stage.
Youngster Dowman is ready to come on for Arsenal.
Th game is not won yet but he has more than enough ability to help Arsenal add to their lead.
Saka stays down following a challenge – the last sight that Arteta and Arsenal will want to see.
Eventually the Englishman returns to his feet and he will continue.
Vale’s goalkeeper Gauci rushes out of his net and produces a great sliding challenge to stop Martinelli going through.
The Brazilian was close to latching onto a ball played through for him.
The hosts get us underway in the second half.
No changes from either side so far.
The referee’s whistle ends a first half which ultimately could have gone a lot worse for the hosts.
Arsenal have been comfortably on top for most of the game but there has still been a lack of chances created by Arteta’s side. The Spaniard will be expecting more goals in the second period – the tie is far from over whilst it remains at 1-0.
Just a single minute of time has been added on at the ed of the first half.
Arteta will expect his side to carry their lead into the interval.
Arsenal find themselves under pressure in the final minutes of the first half.
Vale have worked the ball into the box a couple of times and released some shots, although nothing that as threatened Kepa’s goal.
A brilliantly worked move from Saka to Merino to Eze results in the ex-Crystal Palace man going through on goal.
He keeps his effort on target but Gauci produces a good stop to prevent him scoring his second of the night.
Vale are enjoying their best spell in the game so far as they keep the ball for a couple of minutes and deliver a cross into the box.
For all of Arsenal’s superiority so far, the game remains open at just 1-0.
A couple of soft free-kicks have been awarded to the visitors, much to the disbelief of the home crowd.
The Port Vale fans make their feelings on these decisions known to the officials, but aside from that they have largely quietened down. Arsenal are allowing nothing for them to get excited about.
