Postecoglou: ‘Our defending at the set pieces was very poor’

Ange Postecoglou was disappointed with how Tottenham defended Arsenal’s set pieces after losing the north London derby 3-2.

Three goals in the first half saw Arsenal race into a commanding lead at half-time, despite Tottenham being the more dominant side.

Two second half strikes from Christian Romero and Son Heung-min made for a nervy end to the match, but Mikel Arteta’s side held on for a vital win in their hunt for the Premier League title.

Defeat for Spurs leaves them seven points behind Aston Villa in the race for Champions League football, but Postecoglou’s men have two games in hand on their rivals.

Speaking after the match, the Australian was unhappy with how his side defended against Arsenal’s set pieces, which led to two of their goals:

“It’s understanding where you are as a football team,” Postecoglou said. “If I thought fixing defensive set pieces was the answer to us bridging the gap then I’d put all of my time and effort into that.

“But that’s not where we’re at. For us it’s about, when I was focused on the details of, not just set pieces but a lot of moments in games where we don’t sense that you give good opposition the time and the space to do things then they’re going to hurt you.

“I think they maybe had four attempts on goal in the first half and they conceded three. I don’t think it’s about one part of it, I think it’s a bigger, broader picture than that, but our defensive set pieces for those two were very poor.

“But there’s a lot more than that to fix.”
