Postecoglou: Spurs not in a position to spend £100m on a player

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou says he does not believe Spurs are in a position where they can spend £100m on a player despite being optimistic of a productive summer transfer window.

Tottenham have made several significant signings since Postecoglou took charge of the club – including Brennan Johnson for £50m and James Maddison for £40m.

But the Spurs boss insists he still has a long way to go in shaping his squad and is confident the club are in a strong position to invest again this summer.

“It’s not what you spend, it’s how you spend it,” Postecoglou said.

“I think our football club will be in a great position from a financial perspective to continue to grow our football team but if we take bad decisions, we don’t have an advantage.

“I agree that we’re in a position where there is an opportunity for us during this summer window to continue to build the team.

“I think I said in the past that we’ve still got a lot of work to do on the squad. I don’t think we’re anywhere near where we want to be.

“It will probably take a little bit more than just three windows to get there for sure.

“I think there’s a fair bit of change we still need to do and I certainly don’t think we’re one or two players away from us getting where I want us to be. Nowhere near it.”

Tottenham’s Premier League rivals Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea have all spent more than £100m on a player in recent windows.

But Postecoglou does not expect Spurs to do the same, insisting the money will be spread out over several signings instead.

He continued: “I don’t think we’re in a position to spend £100m on a player, because that’s not the case and I don’t think that will ever be the case for the club. Our competitors are (in that position).

“When you look at our two transfer windows so far, I think we’ve done really well.

“The premise that we’re in a good position, I agree with, but it’s up to us to take advantage of that.

“If I had the luxury of £100m, I’d rather get two £50m players. That’s wonderful to say!

“It could just be my background and my conservative nature of where I’ve come from. I’ve never been in that kind of position and I’ve always felt it’s really important how you use the funds available, knowing they’re not limitless.

“If we can and someone tells me we can, I’ll gladly spend it.”
